An Introduction to the Basics of Squidoo

It’s more than likely that at some point, while you are surfing the net, you will come across a page of content from Squidoo. It’s understandable since Squidoo now has close to a million pages of content and ranks extremely well in the search engines.

What is Squidoo?

Squidoo is a website created in 2006 by Seth Godin – writer, speaker and entrepreneur – who wanted a platform that not only allowed people to “spread their ideas” but also to raise money for their favorite charities.

Squidoo is made up of individual pages of content, each called a lens. There are lenses on all sorts of subjects, from aardvarks to Zac Efron and everything in between.

Each of these lenses is written by an individual who is registered with Squidoo. Anyone can register and anyone can create a lens – in fact, Squidoo encourages you to create as many as you can – anyone who creates 50 or more lenses becomes part of the Giant Squids program.

The Advantages of Using Squidoo

  • It’s a great alternative for people who don’t have their own website.
  • Your lens can rank well in Google, particularly for long-tail keywords.
  • It’s simple and easy to develop a page and you don’t need to know html or code to do it.
  • You can link to your own products and use affiliate links.
  • You can use it to send traffic to your own blog or website.

The Disadvantages of Using Squidoo

  • If Squidoo doesn’t like what you are doing with your lens, they can and will ban you.
  • You are limited to what you can do on the page.

How to Squidoo

Squidoo has made the process of creating a lens as simple as possible, but to help you get started, here are the basics:

  1. Choose a topic
  2. Register with Squidoo
  3. Create your lens
  4. Add your links
  5. Promote your lens

Once you have chosen your topic and registered with Squidoo, it’s time to start adding content to your lens. You do this by placing the content into modules.

What is a Module?

Squidoo refers to their modules as “the building blocks of lenses.” Each Squidoo lens is made up of a multitude of modules. You can pick and choose which modules you want to use and there are hundreds to choose from.

For instance, for a basic lens, you might add an Intro Module to include an introduction, a few text modules to add content, a Guest Book Module so that others can leave comments on your lens and an RSS module to add your blog’s feed.

Can You Make Money with Squidoo?

Most definitely! One of the main reasons Squidoo has become so popular is because you can make money using it. There are several ways to do this, including:

1. Amazon, Ebay, Cafepress

You can add an Amazon, eBay or Cafepress module to your lens which features products that you choose and recommend. When you make a sale from these modules you receive a commission. However, you will have to share that commission with Squidoo. Alternatively you can add your own affiliate links and receive the full commission.

2. Royalties

Squidoo makes money from the ads it displays on your site. You’ll see the ads at the very top of your lens as well as on the sidebar. At the end of every month, Squidoo apportions some of these earnings to charity and some to its Squidoo members.

You can choose to donate your royalties to charity, keep it for yourself or do a bit of a mix. The choice is entirely up to you.

3. Referrals

Another great way to make money is by referring other people to Squidoo. When they earn their first $15 on Squidoo, you will receive a $5 bonus!

4. Affiliate Links

Squidoo has been generous enough to allow users to add their own affiliate links to their lenses. This is the best way to make money with Squidoo as you receive the full commission, as opposed to having to share it. Just add affiliate links from Clickbank, Commission Junction, Google Affiliate Network, Amazon, Pepperjam or any of the other affiliate networks.

Squidoo is an excellent way for an absolute beginner to get into affiliate marketing on the internet or for just sharing information about your favorite hobbies or interests. It’s quick, its easy and most of all it’s fun!

Paula and Wanda are two friends who own and run a number of blogs including Affiliate Blog Online – a website devoted to helping others become successful bloggers. They have also developed a Free Squidoo 7 Day eCourse which provides a step-by-step guide to creating a Squidoo lens and making money from it.

ehmmm that's not much helpful. A lot affiliate marketers use Squidoo to build backlinks and traffic. It would be helpful to learn more about that – how to promote Squidoo lens.

  • gregellison

I also like hubpages it is the same concept of squidoo. Thanks Greg Ellison

Matej – this post is meant to be an introduction for people who aren't aware of what Squidoo is :).

  • http://www.spoilersguide.com/ Matej

I know, but the whole post, it's not the info I can't find somewhere else just by googling it! .. I mean Squidoo site EXACTLY does this thing when you're building your first lens, it guides you step by step – trough choosing a topic, making money and promotion. Tons of tutorials like this on site http://www.squidoo.com/promote-a-lens

Anyway I just read the first course and it's the same thing like with niche websites, just this time you use Squidoo to build it .. find keyword, then niche in that big keyword, build lens around it …

Anyway, I don't know what to think about Squidoo, it's pretty easy to outrank these lenses on SE with your own website. Although I know nothing. I heard interesting things about lenses -that they are good for backlinks and can help you sell affiliate product, create little link web around your site, articles on sites like ezine, other lenses, etc.. I will be interesting to learn more about promotion, always wanted to know more about it, now's the time since I don't have to search for it :)

This is a really useful post Paula, I have been wanted to learn other ways of making money online and with the 7 Day Squiddo Course I should be able to figure it out. Thanks.

    Hi Paula,
I know that you are thankful you had the opportunity to guest post on Keller's blog. Nice!
This is good for me, because I signed up, got lost, got tried of getting emails from Squidoo every day for eight days in a row and walked away. It's nice to have a post that lays it out for you quickly and without all the fluff.

I have a concern about posting duplicate content though, how do I avoid that while still sending traffic back to my blog? Do I need to create totally new content for Squidoo?

    Thanks for the post.
    @Ileane

    Thanks Keller,

Definitely wanting to create a lens soon but it's always a question of priorities when you have limited time. Fortunately I have a lot of free days in the next month – so great to have these tips for future reference.

    Best wishes

    Will
P.S. Great to see you using BlogEngage more regularly – Brian's site is simply amazing.
P.P.S. Any thoughts on the relative merits of Disqus & CommentLuv ? This article by Danny Brown prompted me to try the change http://dannybrown.me/2009/11/30/goodbye-disqus-…
Not sure if you know Danny or not – but he's definitely always interestingly provocative – and almost always highly persuasive

  • http://www.affiliateblogonline.com/ Paula

Yes you really need to create new content for Squidoo otherwise you are left with the duplicate content issue.

  • http://www.affiliateblogonline.com/ Paula

Glad you like it msfreeman. It's always a good thing to diversify online to ensure you receive money from multiple sources. Squidoo is a good one to add to the list.

  • fionakitchen

Good post, thank you. I did a bit of posting on Squidoo and then forgot about it. I will chase it up and give it another chance after reading this!

I played with squidoo a while back, I like the way it lets you know how your doing with your lens. It will tell you what area's need work etc. Teaches you a little bit about how the internet looks at your pages and lens. Title content etc. Good place learn and play.

Very easy to use and has lots of plugin's not going to make you rich but could if you spend the time make you some pocket change.

Hey Will! you are only allowed to use that many P.S. on my site. ;) How are you liking CommentLuv? I'd love to know your thoughts about it too Keller. With the recent DISQUS issues I'm thinking about switching too.

  • http://bradleyaharmon.com Brad Harmon

    Paula,

Are you using these for your product sites, or just other WordPress themes? I have unlimited sites, space, etc. with my host provider so just wondering if I should look into these or just launch another site. What do you think?

    Brad

The first signs are very positive Brad – and I will try to remember to let you know more about how it's going in a week or so ( please remind me if I forget)

Hello Keller thanks for great information about squidoo,Iam always searching for squidoo and how to generate traffic from squdoo your post is really helpful.

  • primaryworkathome

I am still learning how Squidoo works and your article is very useful. Thanks for sharing it here.

  • http://www.fresheventure.com Keller Hawthorne

I recently created a lens purely for the backlink and free advertising of my blog. Otherwise, you can use Squidoo as your main source of income if you choose not to host your own website.

  • http://www.fresheventure.com Keller Hawthorne

Funny you mention Disqus Will. I've been considering dropping it for the same reasons Danny listed in that post – reactions don't seem to always work. Also, I don't like the automatic no-follow Disqus forces on commentors. I also really like commentluv and want to implement it here. You might see me saying goodbye to Disqus early next year.

  • http://www.fresheventure.com Keller Hawthorne

I was considering IntenseDebate – I noticed you're now using it Brad – how do you like it? I love that commentluv is integrated!

  • http://bradleyaharmon.com Brad Harmon

The jury is still out. Comments have dropped dramatically since I switched over, but I think that is due to the holidays (hopefully not bad posts).

I like the ID user page better because it allows you to add your social network links. The widgets are okay, but you have very limited options to customize them.

If I had your CSS skills I would do a custom CSS for the comment section, but I don't so I am stuck with the standard interface which is not a aesthetically pleasing as the DISQUS comment area.

I am going to run it until mid January and re-evaluate it then.

I don't use Squidoo but very recently I learnt that Squidoo has been banned/blocked by Digg. Is that true?
