Lijit.pngI’ve seen the search system Lijit on some high profile blogs recently, but wasn’t sure what it was and if it would benefit you – my readers. Well, I finally took some time today to learn more about it and decided to integrate into my sidebar! Scroll down a little to view the new search box titled “Search My Blog and Social Network.”

What the Heck is Lijit?

Lijit is a revolutionary search tool for blogs that combines your entire online presence into your visitors’ search results. So, if you use Twitter, you can include your Tweets in the search results of your search function. If you use Delicious to bookmark your favorite websites, you can provide those in your search results too. Pretty cool huh?

Inside Look at Lijit

In the following 2 part video series, I take you on a behind-the-scenes look at Lijit and explain the features, functionality and advantages it provides to bloggers.

Why Would I Use Lijit?

Full Content and Network Search Results

Rather than providing just your blog posts in your search results, you can strengthen your search function by including your blog comments, YouTube videos, flickr photos and just about any other online content related to your visitors’ searches. This helps ensure your visitors find exactly what they’re looking for!

Increase Your Page Views

Now that you offer every available piece of content related to your visitors’ searches, you’re able to increase your page views as visitors find more information related to their interests or needs. More page views mean more chances for that visitor to subscribe to your RSS, join your newsletter, or bookmark your site!

Offer a Community of Knowledge

Lijit offers your visitors a community through your search function. With the option to integrate your Blogroll, Delicious bookmarks, MyBlogLog communities and other Lijit users, your visitors have a higher chance of finding information related to their needs. When your visitor finds information they want through your blog, their loyalty and trust increases! They’re more likely to come back and visit you in the future.

Organized Search Results

Search results are organized by Blog, Content, Network and Web making it easy for your visitors to find exactly what they want. Blog results include your blog posts. Content results include your social networks such as flickr, digg, Twitter, etc. Network results include blogs you’ve commented on using Disqus or Intense Debate, websites from your Blogroll, and more!

Comment Integration

If you utilize Disqus or Intense Debate, comments on your own blog can now be provided in your search results! You never know; comments left by your loyal blog readers may be the exact info your visitor needs to find.

Visual Stimulation

Now thumbnails from your posts can show up in your search results! Have a flickr account? Show off those photos too!

Customization

This is a big deal for me. As a web designer, I’m VERY PICKY about how my websites look. Fortunately, Lijit offers just the right amount of customization to meet my needs.

You can change the color of your search box and search results page, change the size of your search box, and include your own logo next to Lijit’s! You also have the option of embedding search results onto your blog or providing them as an overlay – either way, your visitors never have to leave your blog when they do a search!

Offer Suggestions

Lijit gives you the option of providing your visitors with the most popular searches used on your blog. Popular searches are displayed similarly to the well-liked tag cloud. You can go even further by displaying search RESULTS within your sidebar widget based on your visitor’s recent searches.

Make Some Money

By registering your Lijit account, you get to share in the revenue earned on sponsored listings that are displayed next to your search results. This is very similar to Adsense, except it’s fully integrated into the Lijit search system. You can even sell ad space in your search results. Lijit offers you a link that you can use to get people to purchase advertising in your network. You even get to set the price!

How Do I Get Lijit Onto My Blog?

I was pretty surprised at how quickly I was able to set up Lijit.

First, Create Your Free Lijit Account

  1. Visit Lijit.com and click “Sign Up.”
  2. Enter your blog URL.
  3. Tell Lijit which social networks you belong to by providing your usernames. As I’m writing this post, the list of available networks include:
    1. Blink List
    2. ClipMarks
    3. Delicious
    4. digg
    5. Faves
    6. Furl
    7. reddit
    8. Stumble Upon
    9. Mixx
    10. flickr
    11. You Tube
    12. Vimeo
    13. Viddler
    14. LinkedIn
    15. Live Journal
    16. My Space
    17. Twitter
    18. MyBlogLog
    19. Tumblr
    20. Disqus
    21. intense debate
    22. Other URL / RSS / OPML Feeds
  4. Next, Lijit will attempt to automatically include your Blogroll. You can also provide other blogs you like, your MyBlogLog community and other Lijit users.
  5. Finally, create your screen name, username and password.
  6. You’re Officially Set Up with Lijit!

Second, Add a Lijit Widget to Your Blog

Lijit offers you specific code to insert onto Blogger, TypePad, WordPress, Tumblr, LiveJournal and other blog platforms. Once you’re signed into your account, click on “Wijits” in the top navigation bar. Customize your widget or select one of Lijit’s standard designs, save, and click “Install the Wijit.”

Since I use WordPress, I was able to install a WP plugin that integrated Lijit onto my blog. You have the option of integrating Lijit into your existing WP search box or using it as a widget!

    Test and Track Your Stats

Before installing Lijit, I had no clue what search terms were being entered into my search box. Occasionally, I might see one in my Google Analytics. Lijit offers you tons of cool info on who’s searching your blog and what they’re searching for. Finally, I get to see what my readers want or might be having trouble finding! Based on these results, I can get tips on what topics I might want to write about or learn where I need to place information for easy navigating.

I’m excited to see how this new search function enhances your experience on my blog! Go ahead and test it out on my sidebar and leave me a comment about what you think!

  • This just might be the coolest thing ever... I've just added it to my blog as well... just gotta figure out how to serve up some of FreshEVenture's great content in my search now. :)

Keller, for whatever reason this post didn't have an option for posting with my disqus account. Just wanted to let you know.
  • Thanks Richard. I experienced some server issues this week and had to remove Disqus for a couple of days - ugh! Everything seems to be working fine now.
  • Keller, this is a fantastic post recapping Lijit and I like to see that you're enjoying our service and understand each additional feature we offer (like the stats and monetization piece).

Ironically enough, we JUST released a "Lijit Story" contest in which our users can write anything about Lijit and we will choose a winner that will receive a free Kindle. You can check it out on our most recent blog post: )http://bit.ly/ohUvz). We would love to have you enter. I can already say now, we're excited about what you've written as this is one of the clearest Lijit synopsis' we have seen.

If you or any of your readers have any questions, I would be happy to assist them I'm: gboyle at lijit dot com.
  • Thank you so much for your feedback Grace! I would love to enter the contest. I 'll go check it out today.

You've definitely got a new fan of Lijit here!
  • Of course! Let me know if you have any questions about the contest--we're already underway and are excited to see how it unfolds. FYI, we have also turned on photo thumbnails in your search results, take a look :)
  • Awesome thumbnail feature Grace!

I decided to keep my search box at the top as is since Lijit changes the text in the box to "Lijit Search." I think this will confuse my readers. Also, I noticed if I have Lijit override my existing search box, it removes the option for a widget, which means I can't display the popular searches. So, for now I will keep the default at the top and Lijit in my sidebar.

I have popular searches showing up now! Of course, they seem to be my own test searches, but it's great to see it working.

I went ahead and submitted my post to the contest. Can't wait to see who wins. Oh, and I added a 2 part video series to my post that you may want to check out Grace. It gives my readers an inside look at Lijit. Thanks for your help!
  • I'm glad you like the thumbnails. It's in beta, but it is one of my favorite (up and coming) features!

You're also right about the WP plugin, the widget features aren't available since it's with WP and we're only overriding your default search. However, we could provide you with separate code (under the search) to show the popular search cloud and you can title your search, so readers may not be confused. We like having options and being flexible :) Your current Lijit search looks great and if you're happy, then we're happy.

The video tutorials are fantastic. You have done a great job of breaking down Lijit and our services. Let me know if you need anything else and thanks again for the shout out, this is a great post!
  • Grace, you've provided fantastic customer service! I will be sure to recommend Lijit to every blogger I meet.
  • Thanks, that is a perfect idea for one of my blogs. I am going to implement this now! I've used Lijit before but only on Squidoo. I've seen it around on blogs, but never fully understood why. Now I get it!
  • Glad I could help Anna! BTW: I really like your blog. It's really well organized and easy to navigate. You should submit it to my upcoming Best WordPress Design contest! Click here for more info: http://www.fresheventure.com/1256/questions-bes...

    Regards
    Sudeep
  • That's awesome that you're taking action Sudeep! All of the reports and tracking are worth nothing if we don't use them. I'm excited to see what insight Lijit can offer me on visitors.
  • Highly informative. Will help me use Lijit. If this is Lijit story, it comprehensive, but not what I expected. Saved this as favourite for better use later. Cheers.
  • Keller, thanks for entering the Lijit storytelling contest. We appreciate you taking the time to write such a thorough review of our service.

We're announcing the winner of our contest tomorrow. Stay tuned...
  • Tara - I got my Kindle, T-Shirt, HANDWRITTEN Note and Stickers in the mail yesterday! I'm so excited!!! Thank you so much for the contest, prizes and awesome service - I will continue to recommend your search to every blog user I know!
  • 7ClownCircus
Excellent tutorial. Congrats on the well deserved kindle!
  • Thanks! You know, your comment was how I found out I won!
  • Even Lijit marketing team could not have written a better promo copy
  • Wow - that's very nice of you to say - thank you !
  • I have never heard of lijit before I will check it out for my internet marketing tutorials blog. Great post.
  • I hope you find Lijit helpful Rod. BTW - I noticed you have it set so that people have to log in to leave comments on your blog. I was wondering if you've considered turning that off. That can be a real deterrent for people. I noticed you have some good posts like your review of WordTracker. You may want to consider inviting more comments by turning the log in requirement off.
