Review of the Top Blog Directories You Should Be Listed In

Keller Hawthorne | August 6, 2009 | 49 Comments
Blogging 101, Resources

I’ve just spent the last day submitting my blog to several blog directories. Ok, it didn’t take up a full 24 hours, but I’m already sick of the process (it’s sooo boring). It is, however, a necessary step to take when you want to increase the exposure of your blog, form new relationships with fellow bloggers and increase your traffic!

There are several resources online for finding links to the top blog directories. My post is meant to explain to you which directories I chose to submit to and why.

Following is a list of blog directories I’ve joined, a quick description of each, and points I like or don’t like about each. If you haven’t spent time submitting your blog to blog directories, take some time THIS WEEK! It’s an easy enough process and may end up benefiting your blog for years to come.

Tip.gifCreate a Bookmark Folder in your browser specifically for blog directories and save any and all that you submit to.

Blog Catalog

This is my favorite of the bunch! I actually joined back in June. I have received more traffic, connections and exposure from this directory than any of the others so far. It’s not just a directory – it’s a social network!

What I Like:

  • The design is clean and easy to navigate.
  • There are a ton of bloggers you can connect with.
  • Members can rate your blog.
  • You can “Friend” people.
  • You can “Favorite” blogs.
  • You can create or join groups.
  • You can send out “Broadcasts” to all of your followers.
  • You can add all of your social networks.
  • You can add community widgets to your blog.

What I Don’t Like:

So far, I’m pretty darn happy with this one.

RSS or DeepLink Feature:

Blogged

I just submitted my blog to Blogged yesterday and already I have 18 followers! This indicates this directory has active members who want to connect with fellow bloggers. Blogged is very similar to Blog Catalog.

  • There are a ton of bloggers you can connect with.
  • Members can rate your blog.
  • You can “Friend” people.
  • You can “Follow” blogs.
  • You can submit posts.
  • You can send out “Broadcasts” to all of your followers.
  • You can chat with people.
  • Shows a lot of your recent posts.
  • Allows people to subscribe to your RSS from your listing.

What I Don’t Like:

  • As opposed to Blog Catalog, it takes a few days for your blog submission to be added.
  • You can’t add your social networks.

This is a great list. I haven't heard about all of them. Will be adding my blog to all the ones that you mentioned! I love getting those lists. I guess I am too lazy to do it myself :)

Thanks Josh. There are quite a few I haven't used yet, but will soon. I'll be sure to add them to the list.

It took me 3 months to get serious about blog directories, so I'm right there with you on the laziness factor!

    Hiya fresheventure,

Thanks for reviewing blgoengage. I loved your review and if you follow my blog I have an article tomorrow that states similar disappointments as you. I try hard to keep blogengage clean and organized but it’s so hard! I first started with blgoengage back in 2007 I think the ladder part of the year I also added the forum.

Seeing the software for the main site and the forums are different the user name and password will also differ. Around the mid part of 2008 I added a blog link directory. The sad part here is once again it was a different software script. So right now blogengage is using three different software scripts it’s so annoying as an end user and the owner.

I have big plans for 2010 lets hope our members stick around to see what’s happening.

Thanks for the review! Also I’m not sure if you noticed I also own a Blog Vote Directory http://www.blogserp.com

    Hope to see you submitting.

great review. Some of the blog directory I haven't hear and use, but now I know because of your review. thanks again.

  • avjshah

Awesome list , will be adding my blogs to rest all apart from blogcatalog as already there.

  • http://twitter.com/taxtorpedo Robert A. Kearse

Very good annotated list, particularly the “What I Like” and “What I Don’t Like” features.

Directory backlinks should not be an isolated tactic.

The backlinks from blog directories should be combined with the backlinks from the articles submitted to article directories (on topics closely related to your blog’s most important keywords).

A properly developed backlink program will deliver far more targeted traffic to your blog due to its impact on the search engines than due to the actual directory links themselves.

I maintain a list of The Top 101 Blog Directories & RSS Submission Sites on my blog at:

    Blog Directories List

Since I update this list weekly there are now 493 entries listed with NO DEAD LINKS.

Try to submit to 3-5 directories PER DAY. This discipline will pay big dividends over the long run.

If you find sufficient value in this list, please link to it in your “Recommended Resources” section.

    Thanks.

    Best of success,

    Robert A. Kearse

    Hey Keller,
Again this is a fantastic post. I’m really excited to see a list like this one. I’ll have to get off my bum and submit like crazy.

Also, I gotta know… what’s the new little bar across the bottom of your site and how do I get one?

Oh, and here’s a great resource from the creator of wordpress if you are looking for other great stuff: http://automattic.com/
I figured you always share neat stuff with us, I could return the favor. :)

  • http://www.greatgardeninggifts.com/ Jill

Thanks for the great list and info, Keller. Some of these are certainly new to me. I'll need to set aside some time, get a tall refreshment, and get started!

  • http://www.fresheventure.com Keller Hawthorne

Actually Kaushik, there are directories of directories. The only issue is they're really, really big. It would take forever to go through each link and you can't tell if they are even worth your time. I'm going to be adding a much smaller directory to my blog soon so stay tuned!

  • http://feelintheloveblog.com/ Terry

Hey! I am interning with BlogCatalog and I wanted to say Thanks for showing us some love! I recently just started blogging and through my research required by my job, I am learning how to get more traffic to MY blog. You have provided a very useful list of blog directories and I, too, will be checking them out. Thank you for taking the time to make sure a great list and for helping out your fellow bloggers :) Keep up the good work!

  • http://www.fresheventure.com Keller Hawthorne

I know what you mean. Fortunately, this type of activity can be a “once every six months” thing. Spend 1-2 days dedicated to submissions and then move onto something else.

  • http://www.rankhighsolutions.com/ Jerry R.

    Hey keller,

    Great List! Bookmarked!

Also, do you find and link juice value from the directories that require payment? Have you seen any benefit from any of the directories you are a member of?

    If so, which ones?

    Thanks

  • http://www.fresheventure.com Keller Hawthorne

Jerry – Since I just submitted my site to these directories a couple weeks ago, I'm not sure which ones offer the most traffic and seo benefits. I will have to get back to you on this in a couple of months.

So far, Blog Catalog has brought me a lot of traffic. I would says any directory that offers social networking can benefit your blog quite a bit.

Very nice work, but I have to admit that I cheated. I just looked at the links at the bottom of your page. I clicked on them, and if I liked what I saw I submitted my blog. I figured if Keller is doing it then it must be good (just don't go jumping off any bridges or my mother will have to get involved).

I wish I would have known about this post before hand, it would have been nice not to have been just blindly following you. I think I might change a few of them based on this post.

My only wish is that the comparison was available in a table format.

    Hi Keller,
I feel lucky to find you. From your list it looks like you are a social butterfly. A quick question to you. Which directory(or directories) is the best source of traffic for you?

  • satrap

very nice and useful list keller. found your blog while browsing on blogengage actually. i have submited my blog to most of these long time ago, but never even rellay got engaged, but your review made me want to take a second look and get involved. the only problem is time. with a day time job and having to write articles and do seo and this and that, there is little time to venture out. anu how thank you for the list.

Hi, Wow what an amizing post I found this through a random google search.

May I ask what is the funky bar at the bottom of this blog? And where could I be lucky enough to find one?

    Many thanks

  • http://www.fresheventure.com Keller Hawthorne

Thanks Ricky! The best so far has been BlogCatalog as it's a social network. However, as with any social network, you have to use it to get results. I would say the next on the list would be Blog Engage. Since I added their social button to my post, I've received daily traffic from them!
