How Did Google’s October 2009 PageRank Update Affect You?

We’ve all been chompin’ at the bit for this latest update, huh? Wondering if you’re going to lose or gain PageRank can leave you in suspense – you never know exactly what Google’s going to do. But, you should have an idea of what to expect based on the effort you put into your website. If you’re…

  • Updating Your Content OFTEN and Consistently
  • Obtaining Inbound Links
  • Performing On-Page Optimization
  • Performing Off-Page Optimization

…you should be able to maintain or increase your PR with each update. If you neglect these tasks, you can expect your PR to suffer.

Not Sure How to Obtain PageRank?

Years ago, I struggled right along with you. Over the last 5 years, I’ve invested the majority of my time in learning SEO – and that learning has paid off greatly. Check out the following posts where I discuss how I obtain PR for my websites and how you can too!

How Did The PR Update Affect My Websites?

I thought it would be fun to track my PR changes on my blog, so below you will find info on how the latest PR update affected my blog, my ecommerce stores and my web marketing site!

Why Did Theme Kitchen Lose PageRank?

Simple – I haven’t worked on the SEO aspects of that store lately. I’ve gotten behind with updating product lines and I haven’t worked on obtaining any new inbound links. You’ve got to be willing to put in the work if you want to see the results, right? Fortunately, I have maintained my important keyword rankings, but without effort on my part, I can expect to lose those in the future as well.

Need Help With Your Keyword Research?

Keyword Research is the cornerstone of SEO. If you’re having trouble obtaining keyword rankings and PR, you may want to focus on learning which keywords you should be targeting. Fortunately, it’s not all that complicated. In fact, I’ve written a report that specifically talks about how to perform keyword research. The report is free for all of my newsletter subscribers. • Hi, This is great post and thanks for telling us about google updates but I want to know next update I have some new websites and I hope they got pr 3 .

    Hey Keller:
Our site you helped us with www.noknowsweddings.com got a PageRank of 2 after 2 months. Hopefully this is the just the start!
  • I'm so proud of you guys Jeff! Keep it up.
  • Mine is now a 2, which I am happy with for some reason I had a 1 Aug then it dropped to zero not sure why. I havn't check it in a while really been slacking a bit over the last month and now it has increase. I get backlinks are paying off.
  • My blog got a minus page rank. It was 3 and now it is 2.
I was using custom domain with blogspot when it was 3. Now I am using the same domain with my self hosted wordpress. But I got my visitors increased.
I do not know why my PR decreased! Is i due to trackback/pingback from new sites?
  • I'm not 100% about this, but I noticed your posts are pretty short (1-2 paragraphs). Since content is King, perhaps you could try writing longer articles.
  • studyskillsmentor
I moved from 0 to 2. It's nice to be noticed.
  • One of my sites went from 2 to 0 and another went from 0 to 2. Such is life on the 2 to 0 update. I thought it was going to stay the same or at least move up a notch.
  • I got my PageRank going down from 4 to 3. PageRank is heavily affected by the activity on the blog. I took a vacation from the blog and as I didn't post anything for a month, it's now showing in the PR.

But Kristoffer noted, the significance of the PR is going down (if it hasn't been down already). However, being the best known numeric way to measure how your blog is doing from search engine point of view, it still has some meaning. If it's going down, you're doing something wrong (most likely, not posting and updating the content enough). If it's going up, perfect!
  • Exactly - right on Antti.
  • Hello Miss HAWTHORNE, what about blogger,I obtained custom domain from blogspot but my pagerank never updated it remains constant,I have quality link back from reputated blog/website but never results.
  • Blogger shouldn't be an issue. How often are you updating your blog Bisaani?
  • Hi,

    These are my results :

    0-0 ; 0-2 ; 2-3 ; 4-4

So, I guess it was positive, although I had great expectations about going from 4 to 5.
I've already noticed that some blogs with 5 or so kept the same and some even went down.
Keep writing content that is relevant, has quality and is updated on a regular basis.
    Also be original and creative.

    Have a nice time,

    José
  • Keller,

I guess I will not have one of those PR 3 in just 3 weeks stories. My initial PR came in at a big fat zero ... I'm a little disappointed.

I guess it's just because it's so new? Still zero sounds so bad.

Looks like I have some flirting to do with googlebot.

  • Brad - I just noticed your title tag on your home page - it's not optimized for your keywords. Are using any kind of SEO plugin like All In One?
  • Keller - Yes, I am using All in One. I thought the title there needed to be the same as the title on your header since I am not using a logo there. Thanks for pointing that out! I'm sure that will help a lot.
  • Let me make sure we're talking about the same thing. The "Title Tag" is the text that appears in the very top of your browser. It's also used as the title of your page in search engine results. For example, my home page's Title Tag is "Your Internet Business Blog | FresheVenture.com by Keller Hawthorne." I set that in the "Home Title" option in All In One.

.............Wait, I just looked at your site again and it looks like you've already updated it - fantastic! Just wanted to make sure I didn't accidentally recommend you change the text in your header :).
  • Nope, you cleared it up for me. I just wasn't using All in One properly for that field. Thanks again for your help. :)
  • This current update is good news for me because my blog PR increase from 0 to 2.
  • Kristoffer Sandven
My site www.joomlablogger.net had Page Rank 2 before the update. Today it got a 5 :)

I don't care too much about it, though. Google has spoken very loudly on how insignificant Page Rank is. There are a huge number of factors more important than PR. Google even removed PR from Google Webmaster Tools.

But, to attract those advertisers out there still believing it's important, it might be nice to have a higher page rank.

    Cheers!
  • Yep, I was wondering where was that blue bar in webmaster tools.
  • PR definitely seems to be more about attracting advertisers and links these days - but it does still play a small role in rankings.
